If you have been using your wig a little while or a long while and your doll is in play (we aren't talking about the dolls you are displaying in your doll shelves and aren't being touched) there will come a point where you need to keep it looking fresh. How frequent you do this will depend on how frequently your doll is in serious play. But let's go over some basics.
Brush and refresh. A wire brush and a spray bottle with water. Gently brush through the doll's hair being careful not to pull too hard on the hair when you come to a tangle. Think of it as a child's head where instead of pulling on the entire strand of hair and causing pain, you are sectioning it and gripping it near the tangle to work out any of the kinks. Once any tangle is removed then you can brush from top to bottom. If you have a lot of tangles work on the hair in small sections. Once each section has brushed smooth you can combine them to brush the wig completely. After brushing spray the wig lightly with water and scrunch it with your hands. This will help the wig "find" it's original shape and bounce the style back into place.
Waves textures. If you want a little bit more life in your wave textures after brushing, consider purchasing a children's grade detangling spray. We say children's grade because there are less chemicals and more organic ingredients used that are less harmful to the hair. Detanglers have a "lotion" element that has the ability to clump the hair together. A light spray with maintain any frizz and press the waves back into formation. Simply spray a small amount (don't soak it) and then scrunch the hair with your hands and it will tame it.
Curl and re-curl. There are different types of heat fibers so you will want to test a small strand before applying heat. Some heat fibers will only accept roll curls with a small amount of heat, and others need high heat in order to hold a curl. Our modern wigs all use a high heat temperature up to 330 degrees. Any of our historical classic wigs will use a low heat for roll curls. When curling doll hair, to stay proportionate you do need a small roller or small barrel such as one designed for spiral curls. Larger human size curls won't have the same effect.
Shedding and trimming. Shedding is normal in wigs. All those tiny hairs are sewn into wefts which are basically on tiny strips and rows. As they are brushed and pulled, some hairs will slip out as hair is very tiny in width. As you brush and use your wig, if you find some strands pulled longer, you can trim them back to maintain your length. Remove any completely dislodged hair.
